Budapešťská pomazánka (Budapest spread)

Let’s learn this fast and easy recipe for Budapešťská pomazánka – Budapest (Cheese) Spread – one of the most popular Czech spreads.

Budapešťská pomazánka is a spread made from quark cheese, butter, onion, red pepper and paprika. It’s very traditional, used especially in the finger food called jednohubky – rohlíky cut in round slices – and an infinite number of topping combinations. One of those can be the Budapest spread typically with a piece of sausage or red pepper. It is less common in Chlebíčky (open-face sandwiches) and, of  course, you can just eat it on a piece of any bread you like – Veka, Sourdough Rye Bread or any other, I have a bunch of recipes right here.

There are also modern healthier versions using cottage cheese and no butter, however, the taste is a little different.

I like preparing healthy kids snacks and this is a spread I like to use when I have fresh red pepper. When I serve it to myself, I like to accompany it with fresh tomatoes.
